Do you consider yourself a wellness traveler, and if so, how did you decide that you were? I'm guessing that it has something to do with your commitment to self-care and that maintaining good health is also at the top of your list when choosing the perfect destination to relax and soak up the sun!
The good news is that you can incorporate wellness practices into your trip planning without staying at a destination resort that offers only wellness programs.
According to the Global Wellness Institute, two wellness traveler types exist: primary and secondary.
What is the difference, you might ask?
A primary wellness traveler is interested in the total well-being experience: the trip, destination, and activities are all wellness-motivated. A great example would be a stay at the Miraval Resort, where your visit would incorporate a specific program you would follow throughout your stay. The goal is to achieve an intended outcome or experience a transformative result, i.e., weight loss, working through a life transition, or managing to de-stress.
However, a secondary wellness traveler may not want the total wellness experience but instead adds specific wellness details to their trip while allowing spontaneity of the other parts of their itinerary. For example, the trip destination might be a fabulous resort in Cancun that does not cater specifically to wellness. Alternatively, you might participate in outdoor activities or schedule a spa treatment sometime during the trip.
Or maybe you fall under both types, but it just depends on your particular needs at the time! Regardless of what type of wellness traveler you are, the goal is the same: to commit to your self-care every day. Being in a healthy place allows us to handle our responsibilities to others and, more importantly, ourselves. We can not help others if our well-being is not where it needs to be!
