When people meditate, they often use a powerful meditation and therapy tool referred to as a “mantra.” A mantra is a syllable, word, or phrase that is repeated over and over during meditation. The word mantra originates from two Sanskrit words: "Manas" (mind) and "tra" (tool) – meaning "a tool for the mind."
So how do you get started using mantra? While seated or lying down (the most common ways), you can chant aloud- speaking, whispering, or silently in your mind. Through a sound vibration from chanting, the goal is to clear your mind of all thoughts and focus on being in the actual moment. You then take deep breaths through the nose and chant during the exhale. The meditative state occurs when you bring your body into complete relaxation. As your practice becomes more regular, it will become easier to get your body into deeper states of consciousness. Eventually, you can free the presence of the vibration as "Shakti" – a powerful, subtle force that carries us into deeper states of awareness.
The most common mantra is "Aum" or "Om." It is known to be the oldest universal mantra and contains every vibration that has ever existed. However, a mantra can be just a simple word or a phrase. Its purpose is to focus on intentions to achieve your desired results. An example of using a single word is to use something like "joy" or a phrase like "I am happy." Then, by repeating chanting and focusing on the outcome, you will eventually become what that word represents.
Now that you are more "aware" of what a mantra is, give it a try with a word or phrase of your choice. You will appreciate the benefits of having a Mantra, and the good news is that you can change your mantra whenever you need it to align with a new intention you set for yourself!
